Bordado de Guimarães e Feira do Livro do Porto / Guimaraes Embroidery and Porto Bookseller's Fair

Está a decorrer a Feira do Livro do Porto até 14 de Junho. Agora, outra vez (e espero que para sempre) na Avenida dos Aliados.

Bookseller's fair is happening in Porto till 14th June. Again in Aliados Avenue.

Lá encontrei este livro que me deu a conhecer um trabalho muito interessante para preservar a tradição do bordado na zona de Guimarães. Editado pela Campo das Letras e coordenado por Isabel Maria Fernandes. Uma edição bilingue, português e inglês.

Há tão pouco escrito sobre bordados tradicionais portugueses e mesmo sobre bordados em geral que é bom encontrar um livro como este.

Guimarães (e arredores) sempre foi uma zona de bordadeiras e onde se compravam muitas peças de enxoval para raparigas casadoiras.

O primeiro capítulo do livro é muito apropriadamente intitulado Bordados de Guimarães passado recente com futuro auspicioso. Aqui se descrevem as raízes deste bordado; toda esta descrição baseada no estudo de muitas peças antigas. E muitas fotografias.

There I found this book. It showed me a very interesting work in order to save the traditional embroidery from Guimarães. The publisher is Campo das Letras with Isabel Maria Fernandes' coordination. It is written in Portuguese and English (which is not ususal...).

There is so little written about Portuguese traditional embroidery and even about general embroidery that is so good to found a book like this.

For long Guimarães and its surroundings were well-known for its embroiderers and was the place where many trousseaus' pieces were bought.

The firts part of the book has a proper heading: Guimarães Embroidery a recent past with an auspicious future. Here the origins of the embroidery are explained and based on the study of many old pieces. With lots of photos.

A seguir vem o capítulo Da tradição à inovação.

Para além de se aprender um pouco da história desta cidade, que remonta ao século X e hoje está classificada como cidade património da Humanidade, este capítulo descreve a evolução do Bordado de Guimarães de forma minuciosa.
A característica maior deste bordado é a profusão do ponto canutilho. As cores usadas são o vermelho, azul, cinza, bege e branca (os meus favoritos: branco, bege e cinzento). Há peças antigas bordadas a preto que seriam usadas por viúvas.

Depois deste capítulo é apresentado um extenso catálogo de peças antigas e recentes (63).

Next we have From tradition to innovation

Besides we can learn a little about the town history, which has its origin in 10th century and nowadays is classified as World heritage city, this chapter relates the Guimarães Embroidery evolution in a detailed manner.

The main mark of this embroidery is the profusion of bullion knot. The colours used are red, blue, grey, beige and white (my favourites: white,beige and grey). There were some old pieces embroidered in black used by widows.

After this chapter we found a long catalogue with old and recent pieces (63).

Two questions / Duas perguntas

Gosto mesmo muito destes monogramas. Até agora só bordei a versão mais pequena, mas já estou a preparar-me para bordar um na versão maior. Parece-me que deve haver alguma habilidade especial para bordar o formato pequeno - ao perto notam-se muitas imperfeições. Talvez o maior seja mais fácil.

I do love these monograms. Till now I've only embroidered the little ones but I'm ready to embroidered one in a bigger size. I think I should have some particular skill to embroider the little size - a close-up shows so many faults. Maybe the bigger one would be easier.

These M and R were embroidered with DMC 25, for family's napkin-bags I am doing.

That linen was over and I tried the same thread in a medium-weight linen (Mary Corbet said) and it was a disaster.

Aquele linho acabou e tentei a mesma linha no linho que mais uso, mais aberto e foi um desastre.

The faults are soooo big.

Usei, então, a linha que uso habitualmente neste linho: DMC perlé 8. Gosto mais, e é mais fácil embora algumas imperfeições estejam lá.

- como escolhem as linhas de bordar versus tecidos (ou vice-versa)?

- how do you prevent those faults in a pattern full of curves and counter-curves?

Seda / Silk

Fomos a Bragança. Eu como turista. Fiquei na zona antiga e resolvi procurar uma qualquer retrosaria antiga. Logo ali, junto da Praça da Sé vi uma loja antiga, com novelos para crochet, toalhas, pijamas na montra.

Entrei e encontrei uma senhora muito simpática. Perguntei se tinha linhas de seda para bordar. Sem grande entusiasmo disse que tinha algumas, que cor queria. Respondi que gostava de ver o que tinha.

(ando bastante interessada em saber mais sobre os bordados de Castelo Branco, daí o meu interesse pelas sedas)

Começou por trazer duas caixas. À medida que me viu seleccionar as cores foi descobrindo mais e mais caixas. Fomos conversando sempre.

Contou-me que a única cliente dos últimos anos fazia muito bordado de Castelo Branco, mas tinha ficado doente e já não trabalhava.

Explicou-me que estas sedas são de fabrico português, muito antigas e já não se fazem.

As meadas são seda artificial, as outras - que se vendem em pequenas quantidades - são seda vegetal. Disse ainda que a seda Ridouro - uma seda muito mais fina que encontrei em Braga, na Páscoa - não tinha e também já não se fabricava (ao contrário do que me disseram em Braga).

E contou esta coisa extraordinária: os pescadores de truta espanhóis são agora os seus clientes para estas sedas. Usam pequenos fios de seda e esta serve de isco devido ao seu brilho. Segundo eles a truta tem muito boa visão e vê o brilho da seda de muito longe.

O tempo voou e tive pena de não ter podido ficar o dia todo na conversa. E também de ter deixado tanta seda para as trutas!

Se alguém que por aqui passe tem alguma coisa a dizer sobre o bordado de Castelo Branco e sedas portuguesas, diga, sim???? Tenciono ir em breve a Castelo Branco e gostava de levar alguns contactos.

We have done a trip to Bragança, a Portuguese town in north-east close to the frontier with Spain. Me as tourist. I stayed by the old town and looked for any old haberdasher's shop. Just there, near the old cathedral I saw an old shop with some towels, pyjamas and some balls of yarn in the shop-window.

Inside I met a very nice lady. I asked if she had silk threads for embroidery. Whithout too much enthusiasm she said she had some and asked which colour I wanted. I told her I would like to see what she had.

She brought only two little boxes. As I was choosing different colours she was finding more and more little boxes. We were talking all the time.

She told me that the only buyer she had for the last years was a woman who did embroideries from Castelo Branco. She is still alive but too ill to work.

I was told that these silks are all Portuguese, very old and now discontinued.

The skeins are artificial silk, the others - which are sold in little quantities - are vegetal silks. About Ridouro silks she has never sold them because they are too thin and now are discontinued too, she says.

And she told this extraordinary thing: the Spanish anglers of trout are her best buyers of these silks now. They use little bits of silk and used them as baith due to its brightness. According to them the trout has a very good sight and sees the bright of silk from a great way off.

The time flew and I felt for having left so much silk to the trouts!

Há dias a Pal pediu-me para fazer uns sacos para guardanapos para as filhas levarem a merenda para a escola. Já há muito tempo que andava para os fazer, para renovar os velhinhos cá de casa. Mas, claro, as netas primeiro!

A while ago Pal asked me to do two napkin-bags to take her daughters' snack to school. For long I was thinking about doing some to renew our old ones. But first my grand daughters, of course!

I think these ones will stay at home use - I'll do another ones in cotton and whithout embroideries...to school.

After a wonderful Easter week at the country we decided to re-arrange upper floor: the children's room and a kind of sewing room! But things go slowly. Everything seems to be upside down. And the backs ... better say nothing.

As a dear friend of mine said it is not that we are getting older or slower of course!

In fact I hardly believe my youngest child had her 33th birthday last week and my eldest grand-daughter will be her 6th this week.

So I think I'll be busy with anything but needles!

I hope I'll show you something soon. Don't give up on me.

É incrível como o tempo passa tãoooo depressa!

Acho que não tenho muito que mostrar hoje, embora tenha tanta coisa para acabar e ainda mais na minha cabeça para fazer.

Tenho seguido o que se passa com todos vós através do google reader. Mas ando demasiado cansada para comentar, desculpem-me!

Depois da semana de Páscoa esplêndida passada no campo, decidimos reorganizar o andar de cima: quarto das netas e uma espécie de quarto de costura! Tudo muito devagar. Parece que está tudo de pernas para o ar. E as costas... é melhor nem falar.

Como diz uma querida amiga não é que estejamos a ficar mais velhos ou lentos, claro!

De facto custa-me a acreditar que a minha filha mais nova fez 33 anos na semana passada e a neta mais velha vai fazer 6 esta semana.

Por isso penso que vou estar ocupada com tudo menos agulhas!

Alguma coisa mostrarei em breve, espero! Não desistam de passar por aqui.

Ugly Oilily

Penso que os leitores portugueses já conhecem o que se está a passar com os lindos bonecos da Rosa.
O plágio é inqualificável.

Dutch company Oilily is currently selling a soft toy (product no. 103394-3005) that was undeniably copied from my best known doll model. Oilily was famous in the past for their originality and the quality of the products they sold, but things have changed dramatically in recent years. Oilily has become more and more like any other big company: priorities have changed, production (or at least part of it) was moved to China, the best designers left, and the results of this are now in plain sight.
It is true that Oiliy has been producing a flower-eyed doll for a long time, but this new doll has nothing to do with their previous designs and everything to do with mine: from the doll's shape and proportions to the place where the tag was inserted (the same spot on the same leg) to the line that defines the doll's nose, which is one of the most recognisable features of my dolls.
I have been in contact with Oilily for the past week, but all they did so far was ask for more time to look into the matter and excuse themselves with the financial problems the company is facing. In the meantime, the shops keep selling their dolls and clothes.
How you can help: please spread the word about this. Letting big companies know that this type of behaviour doesn't go unnoticed is the best way of preventing similar situations from happening. Join the Facebook group and invite your friends to join as well. Email Oilily about this (info@oilily.nl): there is a text [...] that you can use and adapt.

Set completo / complete set

Mais pequeno: (20,5cmx15,5cm) X2 - depois de aplicar o fecho (25cm) fiz uma costura do lado oposto para formar o tubo. Apliquei o fecho no lado de 20,5cm.

Médio: 40,5x30,5cm - formei logo o tubo aplicando o fecho (35cm) no lado 30,5cm. Não há nenhuma costura do lado oposto ao fecho.

Maior: 40,5x60,5cm - apliquei um fecho de 40cm no lado 40,5cm.

A altura destas bolsas depende do tamanho daquela costura paralela ao fecho - quanto mais curta, mais baixa ficará a bolsa.

Nos dois maiores usei esta entretela medium-light.

Fiz as alças para os maiores com 30x20cm (com a mesma entretela), mas para o médio tive que cortar ao comprimento (da próxima vez vou fazer com 25x18cm - mas, para bem, o melhor é fixar com alfinetes pelo avesso, virar e ver como fica).

Smaller: (20,5x15,5)X2 - after sewing the zipper (25cm) I sew the opposed side forming a tube. I sewed the zipper on the side with 20,5cm.

Middle pouch: 40,5x30,5 - the tube is formed sewing the zipper (35cm) in the side with 30,5cm. There is no seam oposed to the zipper.

Bigger: 40x60,5cm - I sewed a zipper with 40cm in the side with 40,5cm.

The height of these pouches depends on the size of that seam parallel to the zipper - the shorter the lower will be the bag.

The two bigger have this interlining medium-light.

I've made the handles with 30x20cm (with the same interlining), but next time for the middle one I'll try 25x18cm - the better is fix with pins in the wrong side, turn out and see.

Uma bolsa maior / A bigger pouch

Dobrei as medidas da bolsa pequena (20x15cm) e fixei uma presilha de um lado e uma alça do outro. O que deu algum trabalho, voltas e reviravoltas!* Também decidi fazer a bolsa inteira, sem costura oposta ao fecho.

Apesar de não ter o pé adequado para coser fechos de correr, acho que não está a ficar mal.

Vou experimentar cortar os triângulos um pouco mais pequenos, para que não fique tão alta.

I've doubled the little pouch measures (20x15cm) and I've placed a little loop in one side and a handle in the other. This gave me a lot of trouble, twists and turns! I've also decided to make the pouch without the opposite side of the zipper seam, in a whole piece of fabric.

Although I haven't the zipper foot I think it looks well.

I've to try to cut smaller triangles so that the pouch becomes lower.

and still gave time for buying this little bobbin box, once I haven't win Ana's giveaway!

e consegui ir conhecer a loja nova da Luísa, cheiinha de tecidos e revistas, lindissimos! E tudo para patchwork e quilts. Já repararam naquele tecido com os gatos? Não tirei fotografias na loja, mas vão lá ao blog, vão! A Luísa também organiza workshops.

Gostei, gostei mesmo de a conhecer e mais uma vez lhe quero desejar toda a sorte para este desafio, porque também é preciso alguma. Competência e profissionalismo já há.

Uma pequena bolsa está feita (tutorial aqui). É pequena mas para a foto meti lá : bâton, verniz, base, blush, sombra e lápis de olhos, eye-liner, máscara - e sobra espaço para lima e tesoura de unhas, pinça e mais qualquer coisinha.

e, parecendo impossível, foi o primeiro fecho de correr que cosi e não ficou mal, digo eu.

A little pouch is done (tutorial here). It's little but for the photo I put in: lipstick, make-up, nail varnish, blush, pencil and eyeshadow, eye-liner, rimel - and still has left place for nail-file and nail scissors, tweezers and anything more.

and even if it seems strange it was the first zipper I had sewn in my long life and it's fine, I think.

Pontos de bordar / Stitch sampler

Some days ago I finnaly decided to start an embroidery sampler - trying different stitches and threads, though I haven't much different kinds of threads...

I decide to follow these videos (video library of stitches) available in the amazing Needle'nThread written by Mary Corbet.

Have I already said she is a sympathy? So I say it again!

I have to confess I'm addicted (and I only "jumped" a stitch - ladder stitch - but I'll come back there); the variations on chain stitch are so pretty and so easy to do (I know this is not a new for most of you, but it is for me!)

Some conclusions so far:

- I read so many embroidery blogs in English I don't learn the Portuguese names of the stitches, and I hate this;

- i need (with some urgency) a magnifier (not those to hang around your neck) for some stitches and/or fine linen;

- also need a good light;

- and, seeing that, a good hoop round and/or square.

The most on-line stores are from United States and I think the shipping is expensive and some only sell inside US. I would like to buy here (Portugal) or at least in Europe where I think the shipping price is lower. I've looked for United Kingdom on-line stores but found nothing.

Please can anyone there give a hint?

Há alguns dias decidi-me - finalmente - começar a bordar vários pontos e experimentar diferentes fios, embora não tenha muita variedade...

Resolvi seguir estes videos (video library of stitches) disponíveis no fabuloso Needle'nThread escrito pela Mary Corbet. Mesmo não percebendo inglês os videos percebem-se muito bem.

Já tinha dito que ela é uma simpatia? Então fica dito mais uma vez!

Tenho que confessar que estou viciada (e que só "saltei" um ponto - ladder stitch - mas lá voltarei); as variantes do ponto cadeia têm um efeito lindo e são facílimas de fazer (isto não será novidade para muita gente, mas é para mim!).

Algumas conclusões até agora:

- de tanto ler blogues de bordados em inglês, não aprendo o nome dos pontos em português o que me aborrece bastante;

- que preciso, com alguma urgência, de lupa (não as de pendurar ao pescoço) adequada para certos pontos e/ou linho mais fino;

- que também preciso de uma boa luz;

Há muitos lojas on line dos Estados Unidos a vender estes materiais, mas gostaria mais de comprar por cá ou, vá lá, na Europa. Julgo eu que a despesa de envio ficará mais económica.

Haverá por aí alguém que me possa dar uma dica? Há em Portugal alguma boa retrosaria com estes materiais?
